'When you leave, you're on your own': Pal of Terry Butcher's tragic former soldier son says Army is failing traumatised veterans

A pal of Terry Butcher ’s tragic son says the Army is not doing enough to help traumatised soldiers .

Former soldier Chris Butcher, 35, was found dead at his football legend dad’s home this week after a battle with post-traumatic stress disorder .

Ex-soldier Joe Rimmer, who met Chris in rehab, said: “Chris was a big friendly giant, but he had more issues than we could help him with.

“He mentioned that his tour of Afghanistan was really hard and when he came out it was difficult to deal with life. I understood because that was exactly the same for me.”

Chris, who had been a captain in the Royal Artillery, signed up for a 12-week stay at Tom Harrison House, Liverpool, which runs recovery programmes for veterans.

But he pulled out after five weeks prompting ex-England defender Terry, 58, to pick him up in his car. He was found not breathing at his parents’ home in Bawdsey, Suffolk, on Monday. Police say the death is not suspicious.

Joe, 37, of Liverpool, added: “They train you up to be a soldier but as soon as you leave you are on your own.

“When I came out I was lost, my identity was gone and it cost me my relationship with my wife and family.

“In America they properly look after and support their veterans, but we are about 20 years behind. Our Government takes a back seat in terms of caring for soldiers – it’s a national scandal.”

Chris, who had separated from wife Laura, 39, left the Army in 2015 and was treated for PTSD after tours of Iraq and the six-month Afghan offensive Herrick 10, which claimed the lives of 71 British servicemen

Jacquie Johnston-Lynch, of Tom Harrison House, said: “Butch was such a courageous man. Many of our guys are very troubled, yet he was clearly a leader of men, willing to go the extra mile to seek help and be of help.”
