Icebergs could be dragged 5,000 miles from Antarctica to United Arab Emirates to provide vital drinking water

A company has devised a bizarre plan to haul icebergs in Antarctica thousands of miles to the United Arab Emirates .

If successful, the ice giants could potentially offer-up billions of gallons of fresh water.

The initiative has been proposed by an Abu-Dhabi based company called The National Advisor Bureau.

Huge blocks of ice would be taken from Heard Island, located around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica.

The icebergs would then be dragged 5,500 miles to Fujairah in the UAE.

The National Advisor Bureau estimate one iceberg containing 20 billion gallons of water could provide for one million people across five years.

Plans could even be put into practice as early as next year.

The firm's director, Al Shehi, confirmed the haulage route has already been travelled and simulators have been tested to check the feasibility.

Speaking about the process of dragging an iceberg to the UAE, the Gulf News reports Al Shehi said: "Our simulator predicts that it will take up to one year.

"We have formulated the technical and financial plan. Towing is the best method. We will start the project in the beginning of 2018."

"We want it mainly for water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather ."

While the temperature difference between the Antarctic and the UAE is incredibly vast, the company claim melting ice would not be a problem due to most of the berg being underwater.
