Two drunken guests staying at an island hotel were branded ‘ridiculously stupid’ after they tried to swim to their luxury accommodation from the mainland at night.

A helicopter and lifeboat were called out after the pair tried to swim back to Burgh Island in south Devon in the early hours of yesterday in very rough seas.

The island – made famous by Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None – is cut off by the tide twice a day.

The two men were guests at Burgh Island Hotel but got drunk on a night out on the mainland before attempting to return.

It is thought they spent two hours in the sea before one managed to return ‘in a distressed state’ to Bigbury on the mainland at 6am.

He injured his arm smashing a window and police were alerted. The second man was located unhurt but cold and wet.

Devon Police said yesterday: ‘It transpired the men were drunk and after a night out decided to swim back to Burgh Island Hotel.

'It was pitch black, high spring tides and very rough seas. Their ridiculously stupid actions could very easily have lost them their lives.’
