Singer and model Justine Skye joined athletes, singers and other celebrities across the country when she participated in the controversial protest of kneeling while performing the national anthem.

During the home opener for NBA's Brooklyn Nets on Friday, Skye took to her knee after she finished singing the national anthem.

Posting a video of the performance on her Instagram, she said: 'Got a bit shaky at the end.. was pretty uneasy about singing the anthem and probably won't ever be invited to sing it again but I had to take a knee for the opening game in my city and let my voice be heard. We will not be silenced ✊ #blacklivesmatter.'

As required by league rules, the players remained standing during the anthem but it has been reported that the Nets did lock arms during the performance.

The Nets beat the Orlando Magic by a close score of 126 to 121.

The act of taking the knee was started by Colin Kaepernick, last football season, in a way to protest police brutality.

During a speech in Alabama last month, President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy when he claimed that the act disrespected veterans, even though it has been reported that Kaepernick took to a knee instead of sitting as a way to pay homage to those who have fallen.

President Trump then launched a petition campaign on Friday in hopes to pressure the NFL to make players stand for the national anthem.

President Trump then launched a petition campaign on Friday in hopes to pressure the NFL to make players stand for the national anthem after NFL Commissioner Rogel Goodell said that they would not make a rule for the players to stand

'We believe everyone should stand for the national anthem,' said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said this week after many higher ups in the NFL seemed to support their players need to demonstrate when it seemed useful.

But clear to state that they are not making an official rule, Goodell added: 'Our players will state to you publicly they are not doing this in any way to be disrespectful to the flag.'

'[The league is] not looking to get into politics, but what we're looking to do is to continue to give people a focus on football.'

TRUMP HAS LAUNCHED A PETITION TO FORCE THE NFL PLAYERS TO STAND

President Trump has launched a petition campaign in hopes to pressure the NFL to make players stand for the national anthem.

'The president has asked for a list of supporters who stand for the National Anthem. Add your name below to show your patriotism and support,' said the petition issued by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee.

The petition is available on the Republican National Comittee's website.
