A man who woke up next to a dead prostitute and then sealed her body in concrete under his basement over fears that he might have unknowingly committed a murder has been sentenced to a short prison term.

The criminal court in Leoben, a city in the Austrian state of Styria, found a 40-year-old man only identified as Christian T. guilty of disturbing the dead.

In an exceptionally short trial, the man from the Styrian village of Mariazell confessed to hiding the body and was sentenced to ten months in prison.

The man had brought a 42-year-old Hungarian sex worker to his home for an all-night drugs and sex orgy last December, but when he awoke in the morning to find her dead body in his bed, he was terrified that he might have killed her while he was high.

The sex worker, identified in local reports as Andrea Agis Leichnam, is believed to have died of natural causes brought on by drug use.

After the man drove his 17-year-old daughter to work, he returned home and entombed her under his basement staircase.

Chief police investigator Anton Kiesl revealed that the 40-year-old man said he found the body when it was 'already cold'.

Kiesl said: 'She was only wearing a bathrobe. He panicked.'

Prosecutor Gerhard Ressi described how the accused first tried to cut the woman into pieces with a chainsaw but as he could not manage he hid the body under his cellar.

He then burned the woman's underwear and told police he had wanted to butcher her body into pieces and incinerate it but'shuddered to think about it.'

Judge Peter Wilhelm asked the defendant: 'How in the world did you get the idea to entomb the corpse?'

Christian T answered: 'Because I did not know what happened in the night.'

His defender spoke of a 'psychological exclusion situation' in which Christian T found himself.

Head public prosecutor Walter Ploebst confirmed to local media that there is no evidence of foul play and that an autopsy had found the woman had been using drugs when she died.
