This is the startling moment a runaway car rolled backwards through two lanes of busy traffic before smashing into a tree.

The driver can be seen chasing after the vehicle along with a passerby in astonishing dashcam footage of the incident near Maidstone in Kent.

The silver car ends up halfway up a tree after miraculously avoiding two lanes of stop-start traffic as it rolls at speed down the steep road.

The driverless motor clips the sloping edge of a crash barrier which launches it high into the tree.

In the clip the car is seen being chased by a man and a woman - thought to be the driver and a passerby.

Paul Morris-Hill captured the tree collision on his dashcam, on the steep Detling Hill on Wednesday evening.

Software developer Paul, 25, was on his way home when the accident occurred.

He said: 'I always drive that way home and there's never traffic really on that very steep hill.

'I was waiting about five or ten minutes, it was stop-start. Then all of a sudden the lorry in front of me tried moving left into my lane.

'Then it started trying to move right - I didn't see what was going on at first.

'This silver car came rolling back out of nowhere. I'd never seen anything like it before.

'I don't think it hit anybody, but I'm not certain. It just ploughed into the edge of the barrier and got catapulted up the tree.

'These two people were sprinting after it - it was like a scene from Benny Hill.'

Kent Police said the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 was closed as a result of the crash but that nobody was arrested.

Paul added: 'It's amazing the car managed to miss other vehicles. It pinged off the crash barrier on the other side of the road like there was a slalom.'
