A talented craftsmen is making hay by converting old horseboxes into luxury homes.

Dean Crago, 33, acquires dilapidated old equine lorries and revives them by painstakingly constructing a quaint mobile dwelling inside.

These pictures show his latest restoration: of a 30-year-old Mercedes horsebox that was full of hay and manure when he was first saddled with it in Glastonbury, Somerset.

Within six months the renovation was complete and boasted all the amenities one would find in a normal house such as running water, heating and electricity.

There’s even a shower and a kitchen with an oven, hob and grill.

And, impressively, it will soon be delivered to its owners, who commissioned the work to be done and plan on moving into the quirky build.

While Mr Crago, whose company is called House Box, won’t say how much it has cost the buyer, he did reveal that a conversion of this kind costs between £30,000 and £60,000.

These numbers are on top of the £5,000 to buy an old horsebox in the fist instance.

Mr Crago’s project began by stripping the inside of the vehicle, which involved ripping the flooring and any fittings out to present a blank canvas.

He also raised the height of the ceiling above the cab to create space for a bed where two can sleep. Another bed suitable for two children unfolds from a wooden bench in the living area.

After installing insulation, with the help of fellow craftsmen Jake Churchill and Zack Hawkins, he began building the interiors.

Due to constraints on space, the floor measures around 150sqft, everything has to be bespokely made.

All the cabinets, worktops, paneling and flooring is cut from wooden pallets, which are made as thin as possible to maximise space and decrease weight.

Logs are also used to create the feeling of being inside a cabin.

The trio of workmen also fitted a shower, sink and toilet, which source water from a 150 litre tank underneath the horsebox.

Mr Crago, who previously worked as a teacher and used to run a cafe, said: 'I was living inside an old minibus and wanted to be afforded the luxuries of a home, so came up with the idea of restoring a horsebox.

'They are perfect for this kind of conversion because they offer so much space.

'I built one for myself first and thought it was something other people might like, so packed in my job and started doing it full time.'

He added: 'Our converted vehicles really can be used as full time homes, they have everything you need to live a normal life.

'They’re handmade, comfortable, economical and ecological.'

Mr Crago has named his converted horsebox Helga, a nod to the vehicle’s German heritage. Working on such projects full time since 2010, it is the seventh horsebox he has worked on.
