Jonathan Urges MDAs to Connect to Satellite

The China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) on Monday formally delivered the communication satellite, Nigcomsat-1R; which it helped Nigeria launch last year to President Goodluck Jonathan.

The delivery of the NIgcomsat-1R in Abuja signified the beginning of the commercialization of the satellite, which is expected to boost internet access in the country.

President Jonathan, who was represented at the occasion by the chairman of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited governing board, Prof Turner Isoun, urged all ministries, departments and agencies to hook on to the new technology to quicken activities of government in the country.

He allayed fears of existing and potential customers, saying there was nothing to worry about as government has set in motion machinery to acquire Nigcomsat-2 and 3 as backups to Nigcomsat-1, in case of unforeseen situation as it happened in the past.

The president said the trust of his administration was to improve the living conditions of Nigerians by empowering them through ICT.

He said China has been one "of our bigger trade partners with whom we have had very robust bilateral relationship. That this satellite was replaced at no cost to Nigeria testifies to the faith and confidence that the country has in Nigeria."

Earlier, Communication Technology minister, Mrs. Omobola Johnson said the commencement of commercial activities on Nigcomsat-1R opens up several opportunities and gains for the ICT sector stakeholders to bring the benefits to end users.

The minister was represented by Festus Dawoda, the ministry's permanent sectary.

In his remarks, the managing director of Nigcomsat Limited, Engr. Timansaniyu Ahmed Rufai said the launch on December 19, 2011 in Xi-chang, China, of Nigcomsat-1R marked the beginning of a new era for Nigeria as the country as joined the "big lea-gue nations in terms of communications satellite."
