Civil Servants In Thousands Dismissed For Holding Fake College Certificates

Crackdown on corruption has been continued in Tanzania and in the latest move the president has ordered officials the immediate dismissal of 9,900 civil servants who are found to have forged college certificates.

The government had also uncovered 19,700 ghost workers last year in March who were on payroll and had robbed the government 238 billion shillings per year.

President John Magufuli said while receiving an audit report on academic fraud that the ghost workers now have been removed from public payroll.

Currently there are more than 550,000 civil servants in the country at national as well as local levels and the government spends over 200 million pounds each month for their salaries.

Elected as president in October 2015, John Magufuli has cracked down heavily on several sectors in anti-corruption drive. He is called as ‘bulldozer’ by oppositions and others due to the tough moves he has taken over the period.

John Magufuli said the government is working hard to create new jobs and make people employed and it is sad to say there are people in civil jobs who hold fake degrees.

He ordered the officials to both name and shame the civil servants who hold forged academic qualifications by publishing a list in media as they have occupied positions without being qualified for the posts and they are like other common criminals who have robbed the government.

The audit report received by the president reveals there are over 1,500 civil servants whose academic records were used by several other people and about 11,500 of the employees had incomplete academic records.
