Nigerian Comedian Teju Babyface’s Weds Tobi Banjoko - Photos

Unlike the celebrity weddings witnessed in the past few months, comedian Teju Babyface had his wedding ceremonies split in two and held on different days, starting with an engagement which took place at the 10 degrees event centre in Oregun, Ikeja on Thursday, August 30, 2012, and the church wedding and reception on Saturday, September, 1, 2012 at Chapel of Christ the Light Church, Ikeja and Muson Centre in Lagos.

Celebrities spotted at the engagement ceremony include Holy Mallam, B.O.U.Q.U.I, Gbenga Adeyinka, Richard Mofe Damijo, Tade Ogidan, Muiz Banire and other dignitaries, family and friends. At the church wedding, designer Mai Atafo, and actor Kayode Peters and a few others were present at the church to witness the holy solemnization, officiated by pastor and motivational speaker, Sam Adeyemi. The reception that took place after played host to more friends and celebrities, as many who could not make the engagement and church services, compensated with their presence at the wedding.

The Church wedding

The bride’s arrival at the church at exactly 8:18 am signified the commencement of the wedding. As she patiently waited to be called in, one of the officiating reverends walked up to her and played a prank on her, telling her the wedding gown exposed too much and may not be allowed in the church. He then suggested he bring her another one, almost causing the confused bride-to-be to burst into tears, until he laughed and told her he was only joking. At exactly 8:30 am, the bride, in her MAI Inspired fish tail wedding gown was led in by her father, who had on a white agbada. Upon their entrance, the congregation rose as they sang the processional hymn ‘Praise To The Lord The Almighty’.

Rev. Sam Adeyemi officiates the wedding

After a short prayer, followed by a brief introduction, Rev. Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre proceeded to officiate the solemnization, praying for the newly-weds. This was followed by the exchange of rings and oath, after which they were declared man and wife. Words of encouragement came from all the officiating ministers as each took time to advise the young couple on how best to face and conquer the challenges of matrimony. A dance session was announced by one of the reverends who threatened to withhold the certificate should the couple not dance as expected.

The ‘Muson-ly’ Reception

The reception took place at the popular Muson Centre in Onikan, miles away from the church, but was still well attended especially by those who missed the church wedding. While guests were arriving and settling in the hall, the couple took to the garden for a photo session. A grey carpet and friendly ushers welcomed guests into the beautifully decorated hall. Chandelier lights, decorated tables and uniformed food and drink servers made the event more beautiful and organised.

Tee-A on the ‘wheels of words’

Comedian Tee A kick-started the show with a brief welcome address followed by an introduction of the couples parents who at different times danced to their seats accompanied by friends and families. Next was the couple’s arrival, which caused a buzz in the hall. The duo were led in by friends and colleagues clad in blue damask aso-ebi, followed by the bridesmaids, dressed in their blue Mai Atafo designed gowns and accompanied by the groomsmen who had on grey and black suits made by Taryor Gabriels.

DJ Jimmy Jatt welcomes the couple

On the wheels of steel was Dj Jimmy Jatt, who treated the guest to love songs from local and international artistes as the couple danced in, cheered on by the excited guests who took turns to take pictures of and record the duo. The dance continued with more up-tempo songs from Wizkid, Davido, 9ice and few other artistes. Getting to their seats, the couple refused to sit, but instead started a dance competition which was chaired by M.C, Tee A.

The reception commences

Words of prayers were said, after which the reception began in earnest. The M.C announced that the chairman of the occasion was God, hence replacing his speech with words of advice from the former M.D of First Bank, Mr Ade Adejuyigbe, who advised the couple on the need to keep private matters sacred and away from the prying eyes of the press and public. He strongly warned that marriage is a herculean task and must be treated with diplomacy and caution.

Timi Dakolo serenades the couple

Winner of the 2007 West Africa Idol show, Timi Dakolo, along with his band, serenaded the couple as they had their first dance. The dance session lasted for fifteen minutes as Dakolo sang one of his songs, followed by Aerosmith’s ‘I don’t wanna miss a thing’ to which Teju and Tobi, swayed, holding each other closely. Not satisfied, the excited groom asked that the serenade session be prolonged and asked for more songs. Dakolo continued, singing Brian Adams’ ‘Everything I do’, Westlife’s ‘Flying without wings’ and a few more, to which Teju sang along.

The cutting and feeding of cake

This segment is usually the most anticipated part of  the reception, and the M.C did not play down on this as he made the audience count down from 30 before cutting the cake. The feeding took a dramatic turn as he made to replay the Atletico and Chelsea match, with Tobi as the former and Teju, the latter. He ran commentary as Tobi, with the piece of cake, teased and dribbled her beau before putting the cake in his mouth. Teju, on the other hand added a touch of comedy to his when he started jogging and stretching before picking up the piece of cake. In a similar manner, he teased and dribbled his bride before putting the cake in her mouth sealing it with a kiss.

The official kiss

The M.C started with a narration of the ‘Bollywood’ story line; Abhishek Bachan’s meeting with Aishwarya Rai. He then gave the couple their ‘roles’ and directed them on how to go about it. He taught the bride the dance and the groom the slow motion move and the drama soon ensued. A smiling Tobi hid behind the Tosan Jemade baked cake and placed her hand on her head and swayed, preparing for Tobi’s dramatic arrival. In slow motion, Teju raced to meet his bride and the duo locked lips as the guests, upon the M.C’s order, counted down from 10.

Abike Dabiri made the guest list.

Amongst the notable personalities that attended the wedding was House of Reps member, Abike Dabiri Erewa, along with a few other government officials. Prince Adesiyan from Ipoti Ekiti, Tade Ogidan, Bisoye Fagade, Kunle Afolayan, Ayo Animashaun, Ali Baba, Bovi, and Omo baba also made the strictly-by-invitation wedding.

The wedding planning

M.D of Zapphaire Events, Funke Bucknor-Obruthe spoke exclusively to our reporter about the concept behind the wedding. According to her, the process was stressful but fun, especially as the bride already had an idea of what she wanted, a strictly by invitation classy wedding, devoid of the possibility of arguments or fights. The well-known planner said she set out to plan an enjoyable event, ‘We wanted a wedding that would be cool, nice and not rowdy, that was why we made it strictly by I.V. The bride wanted something that was a bit different, and that was why we came up with the white and black, the red. The bride has changed twice and all those things were part of the planning and all’ she said.
